1 Oz Krugerrand Gold Investment Coin

The Krugerrand gold investment coin, sized 1 ounce (31.1g of pure gold), has been minted since 1967, with other sizes such as 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce being minted since 1980. The name of the coin was formed by combining the name of the then president of the Boer Transvaal, Kruger, and the South African currency, Rand. These coins have become the most popular investment coins worldwide. The weight of the coin is 33.931 grams.

Since the Krugerrand is legal tender in South Africa, it was minted to be more resistant to wear than 24-karat gold coins used, for example, for medals. Therefore, the Krugerrand is made from only 22 karats (or 91.67% gold) and the remaining 8.33% is a copper alloy (which makes the gold harder and more durable). Because of this, the Krugerrand coins have acquired their characteristic reddish hue.
