Famous Historical Pair – Rudolf II & Edward Kelley
The two-ounce gold coins issued by the Czech Mint are part of a prestigious series dedicated to extraordinary historical duos. Previous releases highlighted influential rulers, thinkers and artists. This edition explores the mysterious and captivating world of Renaissance alchemy.
At the heart of the story stand Emperor Rudolf II and the English alchemist Edward Kelley – two figures whose relationship blended fascination, ambition and eventual distrust.
The Emperor and the Alchemist
Rudolf II transformed Prague into one of Europe’s most vibrant cultural and intellectual centres. Deeply interested in esoteric sciences, astronomy and experimental knowledge, he welcomed scholars and mystics from across the continent.
Among them was Edward Kelley, associate of the renowned occult philosopher John Dee. Kelley impressed the Emperor with bold claims of producing the philosopher’s stone, discovering the elixir of youth, and mastering the art of turning base metals into gold. His promises secured him wealth, influence and even ennoblement.
Yet the alliance did not endure. Following a violent duel in which Kelley killed a court official, imperial favour turned into imprisonment. Confined first to one castle and later another, he endured interrogation and harsh conditions. After failed escape attempts that left him severely injured, his dramatic life came to an end at the age of forty-two.
Speculation continues to surround his legacy. Some historians suggest that behind the alchemical theatre may have stood political motives – even possible connections to the court of Queen Elizabeth I.
Artistic Interpretation
The coin was designed by academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. On the reverse, the portraits of Rudolf II and Kelley appear in opposing orientations, symbolising the transformation of their relationship from admiration to estrangement.
The obverse depicts Renaissance Prague at the height of its cultural glory. As the coin is issued under license of Niue, it also carries the official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination of 100 DOLLARS, and the year of issue 2018.
Two troy ounces of pure gold, a compelling historical narrative, and a strictly limited mintage of only 200 proof pieces.
