A milestone in the history of the Britannia investment coins was the year 2022. The death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession to the throne of Charles III triggered the preparation of a coin portrait of the new monarch on the obverse of the coin. The Britannia investment coins with the year of issue 2023 were minted with a portrait of the late Elizabeth II and the new King Charles III. There are therefore two coin motifs in circulation for the year 2023.

The reverse side represents the female personification of Britain. The motif of a woman with a helmet has been changed several times. Since 2012, it has depicted a classically styled Britannia in flowing robes on a clifftop with a trident and shield by sculptor Philip Nathan. All versions of Britannia share a common border with a battlement, which symbolises unity. The rim of the coin features the inscription "BRITANNIA", the year of issue and the fineness and weight of the metal.
The obverse of the coin features the first coin portrait of Charles III, designed by Martin Jennings. The king is traditionally facing the opposite side to Elizabeth II on his coin portraits. The inscription on the coin reads "CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D" and the face value.
